This female purple martin is bringing insects back to the nesting compartment to feed
its young.  All of our Purple Martin Bird House Installations use the Supergourd for
several reasons.  Most martin housing on the market today is made of aluminum,
which is one of the best conductors of heat.  In the northern states where it is much
cooler, this is an inexpensive material that works fine for raising young in.  However,
in the southern states (Texas over to Florida), temperatures have been measured up
to 138 degrees inside aluminum houses, with around 40% of the eggs being COOKED
and never reaching the fledgling (flight) stage.  We fledge out 93% of the eggs laid
using Supergourds since they are made of polyethylene and bottom ventilation holes
keep them cooler.

SuperGourd showing how the adult birds lay their
eggs on a bed of leaves that are on top of the twigs
they bring in for nesting material.
